And lastly, the book! The book included in this box is The Secret Keepers by Trenton Lee Stewart. Honestly, I didn’t know much about this book but what I can tell from the cover is that this is a middle grade novel. I will include the synopsis from Goodreads if you want to know what the book is about.

Book Review : Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass #3)

Warning : This book review contain spoilers!! If you haven’t read Heir of Fire, read at your own risk.

My Rating : 3 stars

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Consumed by guilt and rage, Celaena can’t bring herself to spill blood for the King of Adarlan. She must fight back. The Immortal Queen will help her destroy the king  for a price. But as Celaena battles with her darkest memories and her heart breaks for a love that could never last, can she fulfil the bargain and head the almighty court of Terrasen? And who will stand with her?

My Thoughts :

I have a mixed feeling on this books. There are the part where I really like and there are the part where I think are very slow. I know in this book, the writer wants to build up the storyline for new characters (Manon, Aedion and Rowan) but I kind of zoned out whenever I read that particular chapters. To make it easier for me to write my thoughts on Heir of Fire, I write it according to the character chapters.

Manon’s Chapters

Personally, I didn’t like the Manon chapters much because it is quite slow and there are nothing much happen in her chapters. I know her character were introduced in this book but whenever I read Manon’s chapters, it’s like she just trying to train her dragon, that’s all. I’m sorry if whoever read this post love Manon so much but I don’t see her badass behaviour yet. Maybe there will be in Queen of Shadow but in Heir of Fire, Manon’s chapters are the slowest.

Celaena’s Chapters

Compared to Crown of Midnight, Celaena has less badass action in this book. In Heir of Fire, Celaena undergoes training with Rowan in using her Fae power. Celaena’s chapters was also kind of slow for me but the action started at the second part of the book, where she was able to used her fae power to fight the enemy. The thing that I like about Heir of Fire is that there is a backstory on how Celaena’s parents got killed and how she ended up as assassin. Overall, I think I like Celaena’s chapters only in second part of the book because that’s when the action is finally begin.

Dorian/ Chaol Chapters

Of all three different chapters in Heir of Fire, this is my favorite. In this chapters we get to see how Chaol and Dorian life after Celaena was sent to Wendlyn. Personally, I ship Dorian and Sorscha so much even though I knew something bad will happen at the end of the book. I am afraid to ship Dorscha knowing how Sarah J Maas write her books. But at the end of the book, arghh!!!  I am so frustrated and dying to know what happen to Dorian. Did he turn to the dark side? That cliffhanger got me like whoa! I need to know what happen to Dorian. As for Chaol, it is so great to see that Chaol and Aedion join force for Aelin’s sake despite their differences. I don’t have much to say on Chaol’s part in this book. Although, I did expect Chaol and Celaena to have a scene together in this book. Unfortunately, they don’t have a scene together in this book.

Overall :

I think Heir of Fire is quite slow and I really have to take time to digest on the plot in Heir of Fire. There are also less action part in this book compared to Crown of Midnight. I hope in Queen of Shadows, there will be more badass action. The best part about Heir of Fire is I got to see how Celaena’s life before she  become Adarlan Assassin. The backstory is very cool and interesting. I will definitely continue reading this series because I need to know what happened to all the characters in this series.

September Book Haul

It’s the end of September! I have bought quite a lot of books this month with the total of 7 books. I did not bought all of this book in one go. But what Starr does or does not say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

Reason for buying:

3. Heir of Fire by Sarah J Maas (Throne of Glass #3)

Reason for buying:

The cliffhanger in the second book is killing me!! I want to know what happen after Crown of Midnight and regretted for not buying this book earlier. 5. A Court of Thorns and Roses Colouring Book by Sarah J Maas

6. I Believe in a Little Thing Called Love by Maureen Goo

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Desi Lee believes anything is possible if you have a plan. That’s how she became student body president. Varsity soccer star. And it’s how she’ll get into Stanford. But—she’s never had a boyfriend. In fact, she’s a disaster in romance, a clumsy, stammering humiliation magnet whose botched attempts at flirting have become legendary with her friends. So when the hottest human specimen to have ever lived walks into her life one day, Desi decides to tackle her flirting failures with the same zest she’s applied to everything else in her life. She finds guidance in the Korean dramas her father has been obsessively watching for years—where the hapless heroine always seems to end up in the arms of her true love by episode ten. It’s a simple formula, and Desi is a quick study. Armed with her “K Drama Steps to True Love,” Desi goes after the moody, elusive artist Luca Drakos—and boat rescues, love triangles, and staged car crashes ensue. But when the fun and games turn to true feels, Desi finds out that real love is about way more than just drama.

Reason for buying:

I was intrigued by the synopsis of this book. I mean the main character, Desi Lee used Korean drama to find love. I used to watched a lot of Korean drama and when this book come out, I feel like I need to read this book! Who knows maybe this book will get me to watch Korean drama again.

7. One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake (Three Dark Crowns #2)

Reason for buying:

I have read the first book which is Three Dark Crown and this is the second book in series. I love the ending of the first book and really want to know what happen after the event in the first book.

That is all my book haul for this month! I need to stop buying books for awhile and start reading it. Haha that is a lie that I told myself everytime I buy book.

Bookish Event : Tower of Dawn Event and Throne of Glass cosplay.

Last Saturday, I got a chance to go to Kinokuniya KLCC for Tower of Dawn book event and also met my friends from Mybibliomaniacs. This event was mainly discussed about Throne of Glass series and fangirling about Chaol Westfall, which is one of the characters in this series. Since I only just read Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight, I kind of got a mild spoiler during the discussion. I really want to discuss more about the event but I kind of tuned out when there is spoilers (kinda smart move to avoid spoilers ).

For this event, me and my friends were dressing up as the characters in Throne of Glass series. From left, Carmen as Lysandra, Amelia as Maeve, Me as Celaena Sardothien, Kevin as Manon Blackbeak and Malie as Nesryn Faliq. In my opinion, we look pretty badass in our costume.

I’m dressing as Celaena Sardothien in her assassin gears. I got inspired from the scene in Crown of Midnight where Celaena assasinated Grave. When I read that particular scene, I pictured Celaena in her all black gears and become a shadows to killed Grave.

All in all, I really have a good time going to the event, meet up with friends, fangirling about the series and dressing up as Celaena. I wish there will be another awesome event like this in future and hopefully I get another chance to dress up as other characters from other books.

Book Review : Sublime by Christina Lauren

Synopsis from Goodreads

When Lucy walks out of a frozen forest, wearing only a silk dress and sandals, she isn’t sure how she got there. But when she sees Colin, she knows for sure that she’s here for him.Colin has never been captivated by a girl the way he is by Lucy. With each passing day their lives intertwine, and even as Lucy begins to remember more of her life—and her death—neither of them is willing to give up what they have, no matter how impossible it is. And when Colin finds a way to physically be with Lucy, taking himself to the brink of death where his reality and Lucy’s overlap, the joy of being together for those brief stolen moments drowns out everything in the outside world. But some lines weren’t meant to be crossed.

My rate for this books : 3 stars

What I think of this book:

The mystery in the first chapter in this book really drew my attention to read it. I mean how can a girl (Lucy) who is already dead can be seen by a lot people? It really makes me wonder about this book. At first, I thought Lucy wander around the school area to find out how she’s died but as I kept reading, it is more than her death. It’s about finding out what she is and her relationship with Colin.

For the plot of this book, I think it’s kind of confusing and I get lost on the storyline a few times when I read this book. The event in this book changing so fast that I keep confuse on what the characters are doing and where are they in this book.
This book reminds me of a chinese movie ‘Secret’ starring Jay Chou except the girl in the movie can only be seen by one person only and in Sublime, people in this school can see Lucy.

The one thing that I don’t like about this book is that this book makes the self harm issue is not a big deal. In the middle of this book, there is a part where Colin get hypothermia and get to be with Lucy like a normal person. After discovering what  the near death experience can do to Colin, he keep wanting to get hypothermia so he could be with Lucy. I think that love story is kind of wrong because Colin keep hurting himself just so that he can be with Lucy.

By the way, this is the movie ‘Secret’ that I mention earlier

Book Review : Lux Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Book Title : Lux : Beginning (#1 Obsidian, #2 Onyx), Lux : Consequences (#3 Opal, #4 Origin) & #5 Opposition

What the series is about :

Katy Schwartz just moved to West Virginia neighbourhood with her mother. In this new neighbourhood, she lives next to the mysterious boy named Daemon Black which then turns out to be an alien.

What I think about this series :

When I first read the first book in this series, I did compared Obsidian with Twilight because there are some similarities between Obsidian and Twilight. The similarities are new girl move to small town, boy who first being a douchebag to the girl that he liked so that he can protect her and boy’s little sister who is best friend to the main character. But as I read the second book and so on, the series is so much different from Twilight! Katy is nothing like Bella and there are more action in this series like alien fighting other alien and other things that I don’t want to spoil. This book also gives me a lot of feelings like frustration (in a good way) for Katy and Daemon’s relationship and also other feelings that I don’t want to talk about because it might cause spoilers.

Why people should read this series :

1. If you love sci-fi romance, this is definitely a book for you!

2. Daemon Black will be in your long list of fictional boyfriend because he is so freaking awesome!

3. Aside from romance, there are some action in this series that makes you addicted to the series.

4. There is also a little family drama in this series.

5. For book lovers, you can totally relate to Katy because she is a huge book nerd. (That could be a reason to, right?)

I give this series 5 stars on Goodreads because this series really got me addicted to read.

Reasons why you should read Saints & Misfits

I’ve finished reading Saints & Misfits in July and have been writing this post since last month and now I finally got a chance to finish writing a post about Saints & Misfits and publish it.This is the first time I read a book where the main character is muslim hijabi girl. As I read this book, I found that I can relate to this book in so many ways as I am wearing a hijab and there are some part in this book that shows the struggle of wearing hijab. This book is so good and I highly recommend everyone to read this book (muslim and non-muslim) because I think everyone will gain something from reading this book.
Synopsis from Goodreads:

Saints and Misfits is an unforgettable debut novel that feels like a modern day My So-Called Life…starring a Muslim teen.

How much can you tell about a person just by looking at them?

Janna Yusuf knows a lot of people can’t figure out what to make of her…an Arab Indian-American hijabi teenager who is a Flannery O’Connor obsessed book nerd, aspiring photographer, and sometime graphic novelist is not exactly easy to put into a box.

And Janna suddenly finds herself caring what people think. Or at least what a certain boy named Jeremy thinks. Not that she would ever date him—Muslim girls don’t date. Or they shouldn’t date. Or won’t? Janna is still working all this out.

While her heart might be leading her in one direction, her mind is spinning in others. She is trying to decide what kind of person she wants to be, and what it means to be a saint, a misfit, or a monster. Except she knows a monster…one who happens to be parading around as a saint…Will she be the one to call him out on it? What will people in her tightknit Muslim community think of her then?

So, here’s are the reasons why everyone should read Saints and Misfits by S.K Ali.

1. This book shows that muslims are just like other other people. We go to school, we socialize with other people from different culture and religion

2. Mr. Ram, one of the characters in this book which I love very much said a lot of wise word for Janna. I really like his wise word.

3. There are a part where, a guy asked a hafiz (a person who memorized Quran) about Jesus and he (the hafiz) cannnot answer the question the guy asked because he didn’t know arabic (as quran is written in arabic) There are words that he said about memorising everything without understand it will make it useless. This part really made me think about how as a person, we need to understand more about what we read and memorizing especially things about religion.

4. In my opinion, the characters is well written in this book. Just like in real world, there are good and bad person in this book we can see that there are a good person but with flaw and bad person who people think is a saint. This book does not stereotype how the bad person should be like because sometimes bad person can look like a saint.

My rate : Definitely 5 stars because I love this book so much!!

I really hope there will be more YA books with muslim as their main characters. There are not many YA books with a muslim characters in it. I really want to read more books with a muslim character in it or any diverse books.
